Facebook Is Getting Stupider By The Day, But I Guess Change Is Good
So, I’ve got a bone to pick with Zuckerberg and his team of book faces. I know that “change is good” and all that jazz, but all the recent mini changes that have been popping up everywhere throughout the popular and thriving social network are making me want to gouge my eyes out with a spork.
For instance, their new photo viewer is probably the worst thing they’ve implemented over the past 7 years of their life. The black background is hideous, the photos don’t load properly, scrolling down is a nightmare, and comments are sometimes nowhere to be found below the photo (in my own experience).
Sigh. (And sorry for the short rant.)
Anyway, my intention for this post wasn’t exactly to rant about how dysfunctional the new Facebook photo viewer is. Instead, I want to talk about something much more important. On February 10th 2011, team Facebook made some pretty big changes to their fan pages.
To be more specific, Facebook gave fan pages similar functionality to personal profiles.
I Hope You Have A Facebook Page For Your Business
Whether or not you believe in Facebook promotion, I firmly believe that having a Facebook fan page for your business is crucial for keeping your customers, readers, or audience up to date on things.
Even if Facebook isn’t really your cup of tea, other Facebook addicts will gladly drink it up by the gallon. Personally, the most immediate traffic I receive comes from Facebook first, which usually happens after I post a link to my latest blog post.
Some people won’t subscribe to your RSS feed. Others won’t opt-in to your email list. But certain individuals WILL like your fan page. Give those people that option. Let them connect to you the way they want to connect with you.
Facebook Page Changes Are Now Presenting You With The Opportunity To Better Communicate Your Brand
A whole bunch of random changes have occurred with the new page features, and you probably know this already if you have your own page and took the virtual tour that Facebook told you to take before you upgraded to the new page layout. Having said that, there was something new I realized that just really stuck out to me.
With the newly revamped Facebook page layout, I discovered that you can actually POST on other pages using your own page, rather than just your individual profile. In other words, you can spread your brand.
Big deal? I think it is.
Before this change, you could never use your own page to post, comment, or share information. You could ONLY use your own personal profile. Now you have the chance to spread the word about your business and every single Facebook fan page owner would be missing out on new traffic if they didn’t take this into consideration.
Although you can’t use your own page to post on personal profiles as of these recent changes, you can most definitely post to any fan page you want.
How To Spread The Word About Your Brand On Facebook

Facebook Page Right Sidebar
Before you hop on over to Facebook and start blasting comments and links on other pages, make sure you take these few tips into consideration:
Contribute To Similar & Relevant Pages. This is a no-brainer. Find other fan pages that are on par with your topic or industry and start commenting. Remember that quality comments will go a long way over short and useless comments. Generally, you should treat it like blog commenting—but for Facebook.
Don’t Spam. I have a feeling this will be a problem with these new Facebook page changes. There’s already a lot of spam that Facebook pages deal with, and now that users can willingly post as their own page, I expect this to only get worse. If you provide weak comments and do it too often, you could risk being blocked by certain page owners. Keep it relevant and don’t overdo it with too many comments.
Pay Attention To The Big Dawgs. Of course, we all know that there are a good bunch of Facebook pages that have thousands, or even millions of fans. That’s huge. You should be paying close attention those big dawgs in your niche and contributing smartly and where necessary.
Give A Little Facebook Page Liking Love. Your own page can actually now “like” other pages and display them on your page to your fans. It’s kind of like a blogroll with a new twist to it, and it’s great if you can team up with other page owners and agree to like each other’s pages. But with that said, you need to be careful that you don’t go nuts with liking too many other pages since posts from pages you like can now appear in your page feeds, and that can add a lot of clutter for your fans.
Don’t Get Too Caught Up In Page Promotion. Sometimes, we can get so distracted with promotion that it becomes all too easy to neglect our own page. Make sure you contribute to your own page by answering comments and updating where necessary. This is especially easier now with the recent changes since Facebook activated notifications for when fans post on your page wall. You have no excuse to neglect your own wall.
Bring Your Brand To Life On Facebook… “Out Of The Box” Style
Now that Facebook pages look and function a lot like personal profiles, there are a lot of fun things we can do with their layouts. Back when the changes were made to personal profiles and we all noticed that strange band of tagged photos across our profiles at the top, Alexander Oulin decided to take the opportunity to utilize this option and transform it into a work of art.
Clearly impressed and inspired, I copied his gorgeous idea and applied it to my own profile. The photo you see below is a screen cap of my own face on my personal Facebook profile that I created a while ago. I got tired of it after about a week and then took it down.

Since then, services like FBanners.com have popped up so you can create or use an existing combination of photos to make your own cool looking banner across the top of your profile.
Now that this photo banner display area has also been implemented for Facebook pages, I expect that quite a few businesses will begin to create their own unique photo banners to help brand their businesses and make their Facebook pages look more aesthetically pleasing.
I know I plan on doing it sometime soon for my own page.
So, How ‘Bout It?
What do you think of Facebook’s recent changes? (Any of them?)
Do you have a Facebook fan page?
Do you plan on taking advantage of the recent changes?

I haven’t made any fan page but will do in a couple of weeks. Why the wait? My very own site isn’t live yet. By the way, thanks for the lesson you presented. Very well prepared and convincing.

Hey Anne, glad you are taking the steps to starting a Facebook fan page! I think it’s worth it. Glad I could help!
Yes, I’ve finally got one but haven’t decorated it yet.

hehe decorating is the fun part!
First I wanna say I hate the new Facebook. The ONLY thing I like is the possibility to post as a page instead as an individual.
I like what some people did with that photo feature but I hate that you can’t actually remove that photo slide from your page. I mean, I don’t want it there, I don’t post photos on my page and I can’t display the logo that way, so how about removing it.
I am actually getting more and more annoyed with Facebook.
But I think it is a great way to promote your business and I will be on the lookout for spammers on my page, cause I am sure gonna be deleting spam comments like crazy, lol.

That “reply to Brankica” was meant as a standalone comment. I do have a comment for you (Brankica) as well.
I think some day soon, the overall sentiment toward Facebook will be too low for the new changes to be well received which will spell Facebook’s ultimate demise.
Dino Dogan recently posted..What Makes People Buy- Apologies
Hahaha Dino, you just said “Facebook’s ultimate demise.” A lot of regular folks would never even think of saying something like that these days! P.S. the Facebook podcast with you and Dan was AMAZING!
Hahaha… Facebook just keeps making all of these random little changes that it’s turning the whole site into GARBAGE. I saw someone on Twitter tweet something like “I hope Facebook just scraps all of its changes and starts again with a clean slate.”
Some of its good, some of its bad. I sure do have a love/hate relationship with Facebook right now!
There’s always a revolt when FB changes, but our memories are pretty short.
Apart from that, FB is becoming the 21st century version of the Personal Yellow Pages (I guess that makes it the White Pages really, but the Yellow Pages were more ubiquitous).
At some point the Yellow Pages became banal, but everyone was still listed. Eventually the Yellow Pages died because the paper version really couldn’t get its act together to evolve.
We’ll see if Facebook can evolve along with the times.
papalogic recently posted..PASS- BT 150 Baby Monitor how a phone company made a great baby product
Haha does anyone use the Yellow Pages anymore? I haven’t in years, lol.
I listened to an interesting podcast about how Facebook is most likely taking steps to evolve and stay on top. They’re coming out with a phone, and will most likely get into search. It will be interesting…
Thanks for the comment!
Hey Elise
I’ve been thinking about adding Facebook to my marketing mix – just haven’t got round to implementing it yet. Been looking for some clear and easy to follow step by step advice on the best practices to setting Facebook Pages up.
Looks like I’m on the right track here – thanks for that.
Got a question for you – do you know anything about using Video with Facebook? My specific questions are is it best to upload video direct to facebook – or should you just embed your YouTube video from Facebook?
If you know the answers, that would be cool. If not, thanks for posting some cool articles for me to check out!

Hi Paul, thanks for stopping by!
I haven’t ever uploaded videos right to Facebook, but I embed my YouTube videos there. I would suggest sticking with YouTube, because it’s just so much easier and that way, you kill two birds with one stone kind of (your video is on TWO social sites). But I love YouTube
so I will never just upload to Facebook.
Let me know if you have any other questions! Hope this helped.
Cool post. This is giving me the kick up the arse I need to get my FB page sorted out, cant believe I haven’t done it yet.
The changes do sound interesting though. I would much prefer the ability to leave comments from my Geek Face page rather than my personal one………sweet cherry pie!!

It’s not that hard to make one and I think they’re pretty useful for those people who love Facebook and love to like every page they come across. Glad you liked the blog post!
Great post Elise,
I actually did rant recently in one of my post on about Facebook. Was NOT happy with the new profile layout and I honestly believe that they need some women working over at Facebook. Talk about not user friendly!!!
I am one of those that is WAY behind in putting up my Fan Page but it’s still on my list of things to do as soon as I have all my thought together on how I want to create this. So thanks for all this info. It’s going to come in very handy.

A lot of their design changes are pretty awful, I must admit. Let me know if you have any questions about setting up your fan page. Thanks for the comment!
LOL Elise, nice rant. Did you hear now their making a Facebook phone!? Yeah there getting stupider alright

What the heck with mixing with our personal facebook & fanpage? They also will show the admins as well :-/

I think the switching between fan page/profile is a great feature, and something well overdue!
Thanks for your comment.
How could i not pay attention to that when i also made the upgrade xD
I upgraded that button and swapped facebook to my page and didn’t pay much detail to it, but now i know what to do with it
Thanks for the share, and i bet facebook will get everyone commenting everywhere to make theirs more popular – i can’t tell if this is great news or their could be problems mixed in? :/

Hey Peter, great that I could point out this VERY IMPORTANT feature to you! Yep, I’m sure people will go spam crazy with this new thing. It’s time to brace ourselves.
Im still working out the kinks, but I think it’s going to be great for businesses/blogs. Now that we can actually utilize our pages to engage..Im diggin it!! Although there are obvious bugs because the last 2 nights FB has disappeared form my blog only to mysteriously reappear later! BOOOO

Lisa recently posted..SiteLinks- What Google REALLY Thinks Of You
Hey Lisa, I know Facebook tends to just go ahead with some of these changes and then we wonder why they’re not working properly, lol. Mine disappeared too for a while and I saw it disappear from a few other blogs as well. Get with the program, Zuck! lol.
I’m certainly no fan of FB. One of the biggest and most annoying time wasters ever devised, and like the rest of such things, it’s now become almost mandatory lol.
Worse, I set up my own page to be pretty much automatic and basically ignored it, then a client asks me to set up a page for them. Uh oh. So I do. I get it set up, a few people on board, some requests rolling in etc etc and what does FB do? They frikkin change everything! Now I gotta go and make sure I’m up to date on a bunch of junk I could care less about in order to keep getting paid. Wonderful Thanks Facebook!
Great post Elise.
Hey Paul, I’m with you. Facebook has lost it’s sparkle mostly with me, but I stay on it… for business potential, lol. And YES, they change stuff all the time that you basically have to re-learn everything. It’s amazing, haha. Thanks for the comment!
The new photo layout is awful, I can’t stand what they’ve done there. I’d also agree with you that posting on relevant pages is huge. Just as guest posting and networking with relevant blogs is a solid SEO strategy.
Then there’s watching the big dawgs. Totally agree. There’s no sense in reinventing the wheel. If you pay attention the big brands leave elephant-sized footprints for you to follow. Just have to look deeper than the flash and glitz.
Jon recently posted..Where Are You Today
Hey Jon, you’re absolutely right, this new FB thing is like blog commenting on steroids. I’m pretty excited about it and I seem to be one of the few who really paid attention to this new change. A lot of my readers seem to have missed the change! Anyway, thanks for your comment and glad you agree!
Hi Elise,
First of all receive my heartiest thanks for sharing such a helpful post. I have just created my Fan Page for my blog and was in search of some tips and guidelines. i will definitely wish to take advantage of these new changes in Facebook Fan Pages.

I set up a FB page for my business, but it won’t let me “like” other pages?? I keep getting the “oops, something went wrong” message. I’m new to this, so maybe I’m missing something??
Are you signed in as your page when you try to like them? From what I understand, Facebook still has a bunch of kinks and bugs in it’s updates, which is no surprise. I’d give it some time. I’ve heard others having lots of trouble with some of the new page features as well.
I thought I was the only one having issues with the new facebook picture viewer, what a heck of an error. Very boring, I just hope they correct that soon.
The fan page upgrade is really cool, learnt about it yesterday I am loving it all the way already. I am going to use it extensively to launch the new project that has been keeping me busy and offline these days.
Thanks Elise for the “Out of the Box” review about this.

I also love the new page updates, all the best with using it for your new project, I’m sure it will be great! Thanks Tito.
Hi Elise!
Must admit… I dont like the new photo viewer one bit. Its the worst thing they have added since the chat feature.
I do like the new page updates though. Its about time Facebook gave us something useful!
Hi Phil, I don’t think anyone has told me yet that they like the new FB viewer, haha. I’m also a fan of the new page updates, even though they still have some kinks to work out with it. We’ll see how it goes.
Thanks for your comment!
I appreciate the changes in FB. It looks more beautiful than before. But the constant change that they are doing? Oh, well! It’s a different thing! I can’t imagine myself that I always need to adapt from these recurring changes as frequent as possible. I’d rather choose other social networking site than this one if I find myself totally pissed off.
Samantha Dermot recently posted..Symptoms Of Teeth Grinding
Hahaha I get where you’re coming from. I’m totally annoyed by Facebook on a daily basis… yet I stay on because it’s there and it’s huge and lots of people are on it! It’s almost a necessity, especially as a site owner. Oh well. I’ll deal with it for now! Thanks for your comment as always, Samantha.
From what i’ve seen, FB makes continuous changes to their design and also to functionality.
Now, as you’ve said, change is good, but what’s too much is too much. You can’t keep changing things every week or so. When will those users have the time to get used to the new features?
And the pictures look so ugly now, that simple jquery script was in use 5 years ago, but right now there are a lot better options. I’m no coder, but i can give them a few examples if they’ve ran out of ideas.
Best regards,
Maria

However business pages are good since they allow brands to better communicate with their users!
